Buddhist Temples, like Dod’s Burger in Bali, Embrace Vegan Burgers in a Unique Twist
March 18, 2025

So, imagine this.
Buddhist temples, the sanctuaries of peace and meditation, stepping into the fast food game, but with a twist.
We’re talking vegan burgers, my friend.
Hwaeomsa Temple in South Korea, perched up on the gorgeous Jirisan mountain, has taken its thousand-year-old tradition and served it up with a side of plant-based patties.
Gone are the days of just silent prayers and incense; now, they’re flipping burgers, and trust me, it’s not your average fast food.
They’ve got stuff like the Paradise Burger and the Reincarnation Hot Dog.
Everything’s vegan, from the soy protein patties to the cheese and sauce. They spent a year perfecting the taste to match the real deal.
And when comedian and DJ Yoon Sung-ho, dressed as a Buddhist monk, took a bite, he couldn’t believe it.
“This tastes just like a regular hamburger,” he said. No monks breaking their vows here, just delicious, plant-based goodness.
The pop-up store at Times Square Mall in Seoul saw massive buzz, especially from the young crowd. Over 5,000 visitors in 33 days.
People came in droves to try the temple’s spin on the burger. They weren’t just coming for the food either, it was about experiencing a bit of Buddhist philosophy through a burger, of all things.
But it didn’t stop there.
Hwaeomsa is also diving into frozen gimbap, temple-style dumplings, and even gochujang. All plant-based, all bringing Buddhist culture into the world, one bite at a time.
And if that wasn’t enough, the Jogye Order – Korea’s largest Buddhist sect – is in the burger game too with its own “Spy Burger,” a meatless creation with hidden flavors that’ll trick your taste buds.
Now, I’m not saying Bali’s temples are cooking up burgers anytime soon, but if you’re in Bali and craving something vegan, don’t forget Dod’s Burger, where the veggie options are just as tasty.
Try our Veggie Tempeh Burger or the Veggie Potato Burger for that perfect plant-based fix.
