Our secret: The Ranch Sauce Behind Dod’s Burger x MeatCraft in Bali
November 6, 2025

Before it ever hit a burger bun in Bali, ranch dressing was born in the American frontier.
Back in the 1950s, a plumber-turned-cook named Steve Henson whipped up a creamy, tangy dressing to feed his crew in Alaska.
A few years later, he and his wife Gayle opened a guest ranch in California’s Santa Barbara County – and called it Hidden Valley Ranch.
Guests loved the sauce so much, they started buying jars to take home.
Soon, the humble kitchen experiment became a nationwide obsession. By the 1990s, ranch had overtaken Italian dressing to become America’s top-selling salad dressing.
And today, it’s everywhere: on wings, chips, fries, and, of course, burgers.
What Makes Ranch, Ranch
At its heart, ranch is a creamy blend of buttermilk, mayonnaise, garlic, onion, salt, black pepper, and herbs like dill, parsley, and chives.
It’s savoury, a little tangy, and dangerously addictive. Think of it as the perfect middle ground between a salad dressing and a dipping sauce – cool, rich, and full of flavour.
It started on salads, sure. But in true American fashion, people started dunking everything in it.
By the late 1980s, “Cool Ranch” Doritos were born, and Domino’s was drizzling it over chicken wings. The rest is creamy, garlicky history.
Ranch, Reimagined in Bali
Now, that history’s getting a Bali twist.
At Dod’s Burger x MeatCraft, we’ve crafted our own house-made ranch – a secret recipe that’s been perfected for our Bali burger lineup.
It’s not your supermarket ranch; it’s smoother, slightly spicier, and made to complement our Aussie premium beef patties.
Our chefs started by studying the classic Hidden Valley recipe, then rebuilt it from scratch using fresh local ingredients.
The goal wasn’t to copy it, but to upgrade it: keeping that classic creamy texture and herby kick, but giving it a tropical punch that fits right into Bali’s food scene.
Dod’s Secret Sauce
We’ll be honest, it’s now our not-so-secret weapon.
Our ranch-style sauce sits at the heart of every burger we make at Dod’s Burger. It’s the reason people come back.
Whether it’s dripping off a double stack or tucked under a perfectly toasted brioche bun, that sauce is what ties everything together.
It’s the taste of California ranch culture meeting Bali’s craft burger movement – creamy, bold, and just the right kind of messy.
So next time you’re biting into a Dod’s Burger, just remember: that sauce you can’t quite stop thinking about?
That’s our version of ranch, reimagined for Bali.
