The Current and Future Trend of the Burger Business

January 20, 2020

Just in the past few years, so many new burger places have popped up in Bali, and the rest of the world.

The burger trend is apparent in all restaurant concepts, and they appear in almost all  restaurant menu.

Social media has accelerated this trend because trends spread so rapidly through social media.

So many restaurants are creating their menu based on this social trend. Some restaurants even design their restaurants with Instagram in mind. These days, everything from food, to people, to places and spaces get just incredibly photogenic.

As the awareness for healthy and sustainable food grows, burger places are also trying to jump on the latest trend.

Beyond Burger is one burger place in the U.S. leading this trend. They serve vegan patty burgers which are supposed to taste like real meat.

However this product, at least in the diner, is not aiming at vegans at all. It is actually meant for meat consumers. It is so close to meat that meat eaters can’t even tell the difference.  Switching to plant-based meat will definitely be the future.

Population is rising everywhere and people want to eat meat. Global meat consumption is rising as well, but farming meat is very resource intensive. It requires a lot of water and a lot of land. The greenhouse gas emissions are huge. So we need to find alternatives to feed people in the future to satisfy their hunger for meat, but not with traditional meat.

Currently this plant-based alternative comes with a price tag.  A basic Beyond Burger in the U.S. costs $20 , so it’s actually more expensive than a premium meat burger.

Right now, this trend is booming – it’s new, it’s fancy, and it’s very Instagrammable so people are willing to pay that premium.

I personally believe the plant-based revolution will be very disruptive when it becomes cheaper than actual meat that we have today. Bill Gates and Leonardo de Caprio are so convinced by the product that they decided to invest in it.
