Truffle fries, neon signs and overpriced burgers – millennial burgers decoded

March 14, 2025

So, what exactly is a “millennial burger joint,” and why’s it all over TikTok at the moment?

Well, you’ve probably been to one without even realising it. These places are popping up all over the world.

First off, what makes a burger joint “millennial”?

Well, if the menu’s got a chalkboard, you’re probably in the right place. And not just any chalkboard  –  it will be full of “edgy” burger names like “The F*cking Good Burger” or something similar.

Real high school rebel vibes.

The seating should be stainless steel stools that look like they belong in a warehouse rather than somewhere you wanna sit and enjoy your meal.

Rustic and cringy?

Millennial burger joints also got those “shareables” (because let’s face it, your burger is too good to keep to yourself), and those so-called “house sauces”.

Oh, and there’s at least one exposed brick wall in the joint, usually sporting a neon sign with some deep, existential phrase like “Live Laugh Love” or “Good Vibes Only.”

Rustic, with a side of cringe.

If the string lights overhead don’t give it away, the exorbitantly priced menu certainly will. You’ll end up paying top dollar for a burger that’s basically just beef, cheese, and some overpriced buns.

So what’s the big deal?

But why’s everyone suddenly losing it over these places?

Well, it’s part of that “millennial cringe” movement that’s been sweeping social media. Millennials love their memes, their tacos, and their obsession with “adulting”.

This whole burger joint meme hit it off when TikTok user @fairylights2007 posted a video with a caption that read, “This song is so truffle fries overpriced burger brick walls metal tin of ketchup.”

It hit a nerve – and not just with food lovers, but with anyone who’s ever been to one of these overpriced joints and walked away feeling a bit poorer for the experience.

And…. it’s not just burger joints getting the treatment. People are now posting about “millennial hair salons” and “millennial breweries,” proving that this isn’t just a one-hit wonder.

Millennial burgers in Bali

But here’s where things get even more interesting.

Just when you thought you had this whole “millennial burger joint” thing figured out, enter Bali burgers.

Now, if you’ve ever ventured over to Bali for a cheeky holiday (or if you’ve seen enough travel blogs to make you feel like an expert), you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

These places are like the exotic, sun-soaked cousins of the Aussie millennial burger joints. Same cheeky vibes, but with a tropical twist.

The exposed brick walls? Check. The neon signs? You betcha.

But now, you’ve also got a side of coconut water, a cheeky Bintang beer, and maybe even a palm tree swaying in the background.

And the prices?

Well, they might still sting a bit, but compared to the Sydney or Melbourne burger joint down the road, you might just feel like you’ve got a bargain in the land of rice fields and beach sunsets.
